Pets make seniors healthier and happier
about the program
MOW of Amarillo recognizes the need among our clients to help care for their beloved pets. Pets provide so much comfort, support, help combat loneliness, isolation, and depression. In many cases, their pets are more like family and help keep them going. However, for homebound seniors that are disabled, have very limited income, and have no transportation; caring for their pets is almost impossible.
The reality is that our homebound seniors can be financially and physically challenged. Often times with limited access to food they will feed their hungry pet before they feed themselves. Most of our clients aren’t able to transport their pets to a vet clinic much less afford the services. That’s where the AniMeals on Wheels program steps in to help.
No Cost to our clients
MOW is already bringing our homebound seniors a hot nutritious meal and checking on them, so why not bring their sweet dog or cat some food, too? With a team of volunteers that love pets and believe in our program, we will deliver dog food and cat food to our clients each month. There will be no cost for the pet food or vet services to our clients.
Eligibility
AniMeals will help feed up to 4 pets per household. To be eligible for the program, recipients must be MOW of Amarillo clients. We will only feed dogs and cats, no other pets qualify for the program.
VOLUNTEER FOR ANIMEALS
Like MOW, Animeals wouldn’t exist without its wonderful volunteers. If you would like to help pack pet food for our seniors, we meet every first Monday of the month (excluding holidays) in the MOW Garage. Please click the button below to sign up for a volunteer spot. Thank you!
Happy, Healthy Lives For seniors and their pets
Support the pets who support our seniors
Currently, MOW is helping provide pet food to almost 100 animals each month. Volunteers help package the pet food at the MOW office into smaller bags, and then another group of volunteers deliver it to clients who need help feeding their pets.
Please consider volunteering for Animeals once a month on every first Monday of the month (excludes holidays) by clicking the “VOLUNTEER” button below! We appreciate your time and generosity!
Future Veterinary services to seniors
MOW has established a partnership with the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine, too. In the spring of 2022, the TTUSVM students will begin taking care of our clients’ pets’ veterinary needs free of charge. This is made possible in collaboration with the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation in Austin. MOW is extremely grateful to both TVMF for providing funding and TTUSVM for providing vet care to our clients’ pets. This is truly a win-win for our clients and their pets.
Pet Memorial Fund
Often times when someone loses a cherished pet, friends and family don’t know what to do to help memorialize and console pet owners. MOW has established a Pet Memorial fund for this purpose. Donors can make a gift in memory of a pet that has crossed over the rainbow bridge and MOW will send an acknowledgment card to the pet owner notifying them of the thoughtful gift.
